Talks on selfie at Norman museum

An art museum in Norman will hold an interactive presentation discussing the “selfie” Thursday in a museum auditorium.

The presentation, at 5:30 p.m. in the Mary Eddy and Fred Jones Auditorium at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, will explore different perspectives regarding selfies and their meanings, according to the museum’s website. The event is free to the public, and refreshments will be provided.

The event will discuss what these photos really mean--whether they are a form of narcissism or self exploration.

Susan Baley, the museum’s director of education, said that three speakers will be presenting at the event: Krystle Brewer, who has worked in Oklahoma art galleries, Mary Kathryn Moeller, who teaches at Oklahoma State University and Delta Murphy, a recent OU design graduate who now lives and works in Los Angeles. Murphy will be speaking by video chat, Baley said.

Baley said all the speakers have worked on art projects or exhibits regarding selfies.

Baley said that selfies seemed like a topic for an art museum to talk about that would interest students.

“We try to have broad topics about creativity for FREDTalks,” Baley said.

Baley said she also hopes that people who attend the events will take selfies in the museum and post them online.
